➕ Adding Fractions

Learn how to add like and unlike fractions step by step.

⭐ Golden Rule

Make the denominators the SAME before adding fractions.

1️⃣ If the denominators are different, make them the same first.
2️⃣ Keep the same denominator and add the numerators only.
🚫 Never add the denominators.

📚 Let's See How It Works

➕ Example: Adding Like Fractions

2 7 + 3 7 = 5 7
Step 1: Check the denominators.
They are both 7.
Step 2: Keep the denominator 7.
Step 3: Add the numerators.
2 + 3 = 5
Answer = 5 7

➕ Example: Adding Unlike Fractions

1 2 + 2 3
Step 1: The denominators are different: 2 and 3.
Step 2: Multiply the first fraction by the second denominator (3) and the second fraction by the first denominator (2).
1 × 3 2 × 3 + 2 × 2 3 × 2
Step 3: Now the denominators are the same.
3 6 + 4 6
Step 4: Add the numerators:
3 + 4 = 7
7 6
Answer = 7 6

✏️ More Examples

🔵 Unlike Fractions

1 2 + 2 3
1 × 3 2 × 3 + 2 × 2 3 × 2
= 3 6 + 4 6
= 7 6
1 3 + 1 4
1 × 4 3 × 4 + 1 × 3 4 × 3
= 4 12 + 3 12
= 7 12
2 5 + 1 2
2 × 2 5 × 2 + 1 × 5 2 × 5
= 4 10 + 5 10
= 9 10
